DUTIES ON IMPORTS.
It appears from a carefully compiled estimate of the average rate of duty charged upon the value of importations in each British possession, that the United Kingdom ranks third from the bottom ; tho majority of the Australasian colonies rank in the middle class ; Western Australia and New Zealand figure amongst tho highest, and New South Wales ranks among the lowest. Tho following is the order in which each possession stands as regards the average rate of duty charged upon the total value of its importations : —
