Amid the hundreds of thousands and millions of pounds that are floating about in Parliament two .hundred an twenty-five pounds are a very insigniacant sum. But just as a falling to®* may* indicate the direction of a win that may ultimately scatter fleet* *J* little sum thrown away on golden {£ tickets to humour memberstot ran ment is very significant, lba* * & has been no necessity for such expeu ture will hardly be questioned, and "J expenditure in such circumstance* say the least, is ill-becoming: » Ministry and in a Legislature that I btf been supposed to be agonising in throes of retrenchment. certainly that members donot yet: n» the reality of the necessity for retren^ ing in every way that retrenching possible. And little; though the sum may appear, yet that little on a whim so utterly purposeless, m many an unfortunate civil servan had cut off the supply that brought£■ children bread, would seem to show & the profession for retrenchment felt put on, and not sincerely ft either by Ministers or member appears that one member, j »J\j t >l has refused to take the *old *&**
fie appears to have been laughed at for his pains. To our mind, and we believe to tue minds of a great many people all over New Zealand, Mr. Taylor occupies more honourable position than any of his fellows. He is at least consistent in saying that all needless expenditure ghould be retrenched : and we do not hesitate to say that after all that has been done and said about retrenchment, there is not a member of the Assembly bearing that costly gewgaw on his watch chain but should be ashamed to 6how it.
