NEW ZEALAND TELEGRAMS.

[own correspondent.] Thames, Tuesday. A meeting of the Board of Works of the County Council will be held to-morrow, for the purpose of considering a telegram from Mr. Cadman, M.H.R., requesting the Council will forward him a statement of works upon which subsidies are desired during the ensuing year, in order that provision may be made for them in the estimates. Col. Fras'er, M.H.R., has forwarded from Wellington the following letter, received from the Trades and Customs Department, re petition lately forwarded to Wellington, urging the re-opening of the Thames as a port of entry:—"Wellington, 17th May, 1888. Sir, —I am directed by the Commissioner of Trade and Customs to acknowledge" the receipt of your letter of the 12th instant, forwarding a document signed by merchants and tradesmen of Thames, urging the re-opening of the port. In reply, I am directed to point out that the removal of Messrs. Ehrenfried Brothers' business to Auckland, and the closing of their bonded warehouse, will necessarily reduce the revenue hitherto collected at the Thames to so inconsiderable an amount that the Government do not feel justified in continuing the full Customs facilities there, especially in view of the proximity of the Thames to Auckland, with which port daily steam communication exists. A coastwaiter will be appointed, who will be authorised to grant clearances to timberladen vessels bound for places beyond New Zealand, and if the mercantile community should consider a bonded warehouse desirable, if suitable premises are submitted, and a bond entered into for the same, they will be appointed under conditions specified in accompanying document, provided a sum of £50 per annum is paid to Government to defray cost of supervision.—l am &c, W. J. Glasgow, Secretary."
