Kilda left for Melbourne, taking a number of samples of timber from the Midland Railway Co., for exhibition, also samples of coal from the Brunner and Tyneside coal mines. Christcuitrcii, Saturday. Tho Canterbury Midland Educational Institute has protested against the Board of Education retrenchment proposals as affecting small schools, contending that no male certificated teacher in ehargo of a school of the yearly . average of twenty and over should receive loss than £120 per annum. George Booth, the first Mayor of Sydenham, and formerly chairman of the Board of Education, was taken ill rather suddenly yesterday evening, and died this morning aged 70. He was an early settler, arriving here in 1859. Dunedi Saturday. Tho Tramway Company have purchased the Ocean Bcaon Railway. InVkkuaßOiiiL, Saturday. Tho house of John Jackson, a settlor at Dipton, was burned down yesterday. Mrs. Jackson was alone in the house, and in endeavouring to quench the fire did not remove any of the effects, which were all destroyed, together with £12 in notes. The house and furniture wore insured in the South British, but the amount is unknown. John Brown, a surface man on the northern line, was severely injured, and had his leg broken on Friday night by the ! fall of a portion of a hut in course of I removal to another section of tho railway.
