THE BELLINGER SALVAGE CASE.

[BY TKLEGRAPH. —press ASSOCIATION.]

Nuw Plymouth, Sunday. The salvage case, McCarthy and others v. the owners of the Bellinger, occupied the Vice-Admiralty Court all Saturday. The claim was for £2000 salvage of the s.s. Bellinger. When on tho rocks near the mouth of the Waitara River, the tug Waitara went to her rescue, succeeding in getting the Bellinger off the rocks, and towing her safely into the Waitara River. After hearing a large number of witnesses, the Court awarded salvage to the amount of £350. In delivering judgment, His Honor said the English cases cited as to tho amount of salvage to be awarded did not apply to a case of this kind, as on the English coast there were frequent opportunities of assistance by passing vessels, whereas on the west coast of the North Island it was a mere chance that assistance could be rendered, and had the tug Waitara not fortunately been in the vicinity, the Bellinger must have become a total wreck.
