MB. R. THOMPSON BEFORE HIS COSTITUENTS.
Me. Robert Thompson, M.H.R. for Marsden, addressed a large meeting of the electors and others in the Waipu library on Saturday evening, the 21st inst., Mr. D. McLeod in the chair. Mr. Thompson was received with applause, and in a speech of two hours' duration gave a retrospection of last session's works and foreshadowed the most important measures that would occupy the attention of Parliament the coming session. Mr. Thompson had great confidence in the present Ministry as the men most suited to fulfil their pledges at the meetings, and restore the colony to a sound financial position. The most stubborn opposition the North got from having justice done to it, Mr. Thompson said, was from the Auckland members in the House. He denounced the property tax as an unjust tax, and would give any attempt for the repeal of the tax his unqualified support. As to Protection, Mr. Thompson said he was opposed to Protection, but would encourage local industry as much _as possible. Those were the salient points touched on by the honourable member, and at the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was accorded him by acclamation. Mr. Thompson returned thanksjto the electors for the flattering manner inwhichhe was received by them and the lively interest they took in politics, as shown by the large gathering that night at such short notice, and moved n, vote of thanks to the chairman, which brought the meeting to a close. — [Own respondent.]
