Our Kaitaia correspondent writes :—The new licensing committoe for the Kaitaia district— E. S. Yates, T. W. P. Smith, R* H. Matthews, H. S. Masters, and J. Bowmarheld their first meeting at the schoolroom at noon on Saturday, the 14th of April. Mr. R. H. Matthews, J.P., was elected chairman. During the last three months several of our settlers have been arranging to open hotels in different parts of the district, and it was understood that at least seven new applications for licenses would be sent in to the new committee, and nearly everyone was in favour of the licenses being granted. The idea was that eight hotels paying £40 per annum each, would leave about £300 a year clear for roadworks. As, however, three members of the new committee have declared that they will not agree to the granting of any new licenses, the would-be hotelkeepers have postponed their applications till next year, when they hope to have a pro-liquor committee elected. . Mr. S. H. Godden has converted his yacht Gerty into a steamer, which, although small, will be-very usef towing, etc.—[Hokianga Correspondent. ]
