MIS AMY SHERWIN'S CONCERTS.
The Opera House was crowded to excess yesterday evening, when the seventh of Miss Amy Sherwin's concerts was given, and the applause was again most enthusiastic. A duet from " Martha" was sung by Messrs. Stockwell and Sherwin, and Miss Fischer contributed a very acceptable morceau by Mendelssohn, "The First Violet," which won her the usual encore. A charming song, written for Miss Amy Sherwin, " The Wraith of a Song," was rendered by that lady, and in response to an enthusiastic recall Miss Sherwin sang the piquant and expressive " Cherry Ripe,' a second encore being almost demanded. Another peremptory recall followed Mr. Lemmone's flute solo by Briccialdi. The elaborate cadenza, Little Bird So Sweetly Singing," sung by Miss Sherwin, with flute obligate by Mr. Lcmmone, in which a duet of complex runs and trills is sustained by the voice and the instrument, entranced the hearers, and a remarkable scone wad presented at its conclusion; so profuse was the shower of bouquets which rained upon the stage that Miss Sherwin turned to the audience in smiling remonstrance. Notwithstanding that the lady twice bowed her acknowledgments, the audience persisted in their demand for an encore, and she again advanced to the footlights. Mr. Sherwin, who was at the piano, had played the opening bars of a selection, when tho songstress, turning, whispered to him, when he at once closed his music-book, and commenced upon tho instrument tho air, " 'Way Down the Swaneo River." The purport of Miss Sherwin's communication was at once made apparent amidst loud applause, the plantation refrain being sung with all its quaint and simple melody. Miss Fischer and Mr. Stockwell rendered the duet "Maying." and Miss Fischer was encored in the song " Becauso of Thee." A flute solo, composed by Mr. Clutsam for Mr. Lemmone, was played by the latter. Mr. Sherwin contributed two songs, "Kismet" being redemanded. The entertainment concluded with the garden scene from " Faust," Miss Sherwin, as Margaret, singing the exquisite cadenza, " There was a King of Thule," as well as the famous " Jewel Song." This evening tho season of the company in Auckland will terminate, when a benefit will be accorded to Miss Amy Sherwin. The concert given yesterday afternoon was largely attended by children and their parents, the dress circle being crowded. An excellent programme had been arranged, and the performance greatly delighted tho youthful audience, who showed their enjoyment by sustained applause, and a consuming desire to hear every piece more than once.
