THE NEW DIRECTORS OF THE BANK OF NEW ZEALAND.
Mr. Gkokob Buckley and Mr. Walter Johnston, who were yesterday elocted directors of the Bank of New Zealand for the first timo, are both gentlemen thoroughly identified with the colony, and are men of high commercial repute and standing. Mr. Buckley was one of the very early settlers in Canterbury, and was a successful merchant and squatter there. He was one of the members of the Provincial Council of Canterbury in the days when Provincialism was strong and powerful, and was afterwards a member of the Legislative Council, and took a somewhat active interest in political business. Mr. Buckley resigned his position on going to England, where ho has, in part, resided since. We believe that he will now remain for some timo in Auckland.
Mr. Walter Johnston is a son of the late Hon. J. Johnston, who established a general mercantile business in Wellington in the very early days of tho colony, which for many years has been one of the most extensive in New Zealand, and is now carried on by the two sons of the deceased. Mr. Walter Johnston represented for many years in the House of Representatives tho district of Manawatu. In the Hall Ministry of 1879-82 Mr. Johnston was Post-master-General and Commissioner of Telegraphs ; in the Whitaker Ministry of 1882-3 he was Minister for Public Works, Postmaster - General, and Commissioner of Telegraphs ; in the Atkinson Ministry of 1883, he was Minister for Public Works till November of that year, when ho resigned, and was succeeded by Mr. Mitchelson. Mr. Johnston bears a high reputation for business capacity and wealth.
