COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office, Thursday evening. THE trade position is unchanged, and there is a dearth of matter for public comment. Orders conic forward in the usual hand to mouth manner, and in the aggregate make up enough business to keep complaints of dullness away. We have been asked to state which country, Great Britain or the United States, was the first to adopt the roller mill principle of grinding wheat. While we have our opinion on the point, we confess that it is not based oil such accurate knowledge of the matter as to entitle us to give the decision. Perhaps our friends engaged i.i the business locally will meet the request for exact information. The import market remains nearly in all respects as last reported. A small supply of " Derby" tobacco has arrived to about naif satisfy tho immediate demand. Sugar keeps at previous rates. Brewers' crystals are again very scarce. Mauritius and China sugars havo suffered a relapse in Australia, and large parcels of the former have been bought for the New Zealand Southern markets. Locally the arrival of the Fiji boat without the usual sugar freight has somewhat stiffened tho feeling in yellows, but the ruling rates are at a point that debars any further advance. A fair distributing trade is being done in teas. Good and medium boxes, and common teas, in half-chests, are well inquired for. The near approach of the shipment of kerosene oil per Elinor Vernon is affecting the market, and slightly lower prices are now accopted for lines. Table fruits are recovering demand, after a long dullness. Salt continues scarce. Rice is in fuller stock, but there is no change in market price. There is strong competition in soap, and local makes arc being displaced by coastal imports. Quicksilver is in good demand, with the markat bare. The incoming mail steamer will probably fill up the gap. Cornsacks are beginning to show inactivity, the requirements of fanners being mainly supplied. Stocks of liquids are not so heavy, and there is not that readiness to accept marginal advances as hitherto. The arrival of the Oamaru is looked for with interest, as many lines which will not bear transhipment freights are wanted. Substitution of brands to fill orders for country distributors is necessary in many instances.

Maize is in better demand, but the price is still low, not more than 3s for parcels on the wharf. Oats remain at the recent advance, and we quote from 2s 3d to 2s 4d. Milling wheat, 3a Id ; potatoes, £2 15e to £3 per ton. In the local produce market prices remain the same as last week. The best dairy butter is 7d per lb wholesale, and 9d per lb retail, while the "shell" brand is lOd per lb wholesale, and Is per lb retail. Eggs remain scarce at Is 3d per dozen wholesale, and Is 6d per dozen retail. KAURI GUM MARKET. Owing to the impossibility of checking supplies through there being most unfortunately no work but gumdigging, all qualities are dull, and scllcrß have to submit to low prices owing to the supply being so much in excess of the demand. The Mathilde Hennings will sail early next week with about 500 tons for New York, her cargo being all ready. The Elinor Vernon, now in Wellington, will probably not sail before the 15th June, and as a , good deal of her cargo is already bought, the

' continued heavy arrivals will find no better I market on her account, while the Essex, now I in Sydney, will, on arrival in Auckland, be I anchored in thestream until her cargo is ready. For the three first months of ISSS, supplies ' amount to 2426 tons. For the twenty-five ■ \ davs of current month the supplies are about ' ! 483 tons, and when we allow for the Norj thorn and other supplies which come forward ] i on Fridays we may average supplies for the first four months of this year at the rate of no less than 9078 tons per annum. As above remarked, we can rind no means to check supplies, which, when other employment was plentiful, were easily decreased by lowered prices, and with London stocks beginning at last to grow we can foresee nothing but dull ; times ahead, unless or until some other industry can relieve the strain of want of employment which, owing to the action of the gum merchants in 185.5 and ISSG, gum has so gallantly borne for the last eighteen months. We quote: Poor ordinary, 28s to 32s ; fair ordinary, .'tfs to oMs ; best ordinary (still scarce), 36s to 375; East Coast (nominal), j 44s to 475. LIVE STOCK & PRODUCE MARKETS. AUCKLAND Messrs. Hunter and Nolans Weekly Retort. —Horse feed, grain, seeds, &c: There has been a steady supply and fair demand, with little change in value. We quote:—norses : There has not been a great deal doing, ami very few outsiders have been brought forward. An average number were entered for disposal under the hammer on Friday at the Durham Yards, but bidding was slow, and -sales hard to effect at the prices that vendors would submit but sales were effected at the previous week's values.
