THE following Section, 37, of tho Shipping and Seamen's Act, 1877, is advertised for the information of thoso concemod; and any persons infringing the provisions of this Section will bo prosecuted according to Law. Engagement of Seamen, 37.— The Minister may from timo to time authorise any Superintendent of Mercantile Marino to employ persons (Inly licensed in that bohalf by the Minister to supply Seamen or Apprentices for Merchant Ships in the colony. Any such authority may be granted and revoked on such terms and conditions its the Minister thinks proper. 1. If any unauthorised person—that is to say any porson not so licensed, or not being the owner or master or mate of the ship, or a servant in constant employment of the owner, or a suiwrintondent of Mercantile Marino—engages or supplies any Seaman or Apprentice to bo entered on board any ship, or offers, by advertisement or otherwise, to procure employment as Apprentice or Seaman on any ship; or (2)if any person employs any such unauthorised person for the purpose of engaging or supplying any Seaman or Apprentice for any snip, every such person shall, ' for each such offence, incur a penalty not exceeding Twenty. If any porson receives or accepts to be entered on boanl any ship any Seaman or Apprentice who has Iwen engaged or supplied iu contravention of the provisions of this Section, he shall, for every Seaman or Apprentice so received or accepted, incur a penalty not exceeding Twenty Pounds; unless he shows, to the satisfaction of tho Court before which he is charged, that be dill not know that such Seaman or Apprentice had been engaged or supplied in contravention as aforesaid, and that ho could not with reasonable ililigonco to havabained such knowledge.
