Yesterday afternoon, at 4.15, the mail "Steamer Alameda took her departure for Honolulu and San Francisco, with the outgoing mail for Europe. She had on board a large number of passengers, the majority of whom came through from Sydney, although a good percentage took passage from this port. As usual, the wharf was crowded at the time of the steamer's sailing. We are informed by Messrs. Arnold, Cheney, and Co. that they have received cable advice of the arrival in Sydney of the barque Essex from New York. As soon as Bhe had discharged her consignments for Sydney the Essex will come on to this port, for which she has a quantity of American merchandise. Intelligence was received in town yesterday that a four-masted sailing vessel had passed Cape Brett about 4 p.m. on Sunday, and Captain McGillivray, the pilot, took a trip as far as Rangitoto Reef, but without seeing any sign of the ship. It is supposed that she was an American craft en route from San Francisco to Newcastle. Last evening the Northern S.S. Co.'s s.B. Clansman left with a good number of paseengers and general cargo for Russell and Northern ports. On Saturday la-st the whale ship Niger arrived at Russell from a cruise. The s.s. lona also departed for Mercury Bay and Tauranga, while the s.s. Chelmsford Also cleared for Opotiki and Whakataue. The s.s. Mararoa, which is expected from the South and. The bri' T antine Sarah Pile, which arrived on Sunday from Lyttelton, was berthed at the Queen-street Wharf yesterday forenoon, and began discharging. On Friday next she is to be offered for sale by auction, and her future movements will necessarily depend upon her purchaser. The tea steamer Tsman is timed to arrive at Sydney about the '28th instant, from Hongkong, and is to leave again on her return vovage on the 12th May. The work of discharging the s.s. Wainui of her cargo of bananas was briskly proceeded with vesterday, and operations were watched eagerly by a crowd of children and other idlers "of an older growth, whose attraction to the scene seemed to be " cheap fruit." The Jubilee S.S. Co.'s Stormbird arrived about twelve o'clock last night from Whangarei, with a number of passengers and 35 sacks gum and 3 tons sundries. Yesterday morning the schooner Curlew came in from Gisborne and East Coast, with a general cargo, after a fair passage. She hauled alongside the Railway Whari, where she will discharge. The Northern Co.'s s.s. Gairloch, for Waitara, took her departure at one o'clock yesterday, with cargo and passengers as above. The Union Co.'s s.s. Rotorua, 926 tons, Captain R. Neville, from Dunedin, via Southern ports, with outward San Francisco mail for Alameda, arrived at 7.10 a.m. yesterday morning. She left Dunedin at 3 p_.m. on the 16th, called at Lyttelton on the 1/th, Wellington on the 18th, Picton on the 19th, and Nelson od the 20th : called at Wellington on the 21st for mail, and took her departure at 11 same night; arrived at New Plymouth at 2.45 p.m. on the 22nd, left again at 4.30 p.m., crossed the Manukan bar at 5.15 a.m. on the 23rd, and arrived alongside the wharf as above. The vessel experienced light variable winds, with fine weather, throughout the trip.
