EDUCATIONAL.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— that the yearly meeting of householders is drawing near, I should like to see some enthusiasm engendered, which would manifest itself by crowded meetings next Monday evening. There is a saying, " Easy come, easy go," which may possibly account for the indifference too often displayed, by the sparse attendance at these meetings. Another reason may be the attitude displayed by some of the gentlemen who preside at these gatherings, they being of opinion that the whole duty of the meeting is to adopt the report, elect a committee, and get home as soon as possible. Whereas, 1 take it, the householders should be encouraged to make any suggestion that may occur to them for increasing the efficiency of the work that the Education Act seeks to accomplish. Some of the Southern Boards have called attention to the importance of a uniform set of school books, a subject of great importance to ' every parent. The excellent set of books issued by Messrs Collins and Son, under the name of the Australian readers, with a slight adaptation which the firm could give, would make a useful and generally acceptable set of school books. Another matter of some importance is to endeavour to secure the alteration in the time of the ' election of members of the Board of Edu- ; cation. At present, the Board being elected several months prior to the election of '. school committees, they are removed from being in touch with the public, who perhaps somewhat remotely elect them. These, and other important matters of general interest, as well as some of more local, might well cause the parents of the children, once a year, to assemble in large numbers to show their interest in the system under which their children receive so much benefit.—lam, &c, Householder.
