THE RESERVE AT ONEHUNGA.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, My attention has been called to the sab-leader in this morning's issue of your paper referring to the reserve for a cemetery at Onehunga. You judged rightly in supposing that if Mr. Bavin had mad© the statement attributed to him, that he had mistaken my opinion on the subject. The only question submitted to me by Mr. Bavin was whether or not there was a prohibition against the use of the cemetery under the 51st section of the Cemeteries Act, 1882. I told Mr. Bavin that if the cemetery had never been used as a cemetery before the passing of that Act I thought it could not be so used. Mr. Bavin then asked me if I thought it likely that if the Government did not object, any other person would do so. I told him I did not think it likely other persons would object. But I did not know then that there was so much opposition to the ground being used as a cemetery. I understood from him that the Racing Club had formerly objected to such use, but that now it was supposed their objection was withdrawn. In your leader, the question of title was raised. Such a question was not submitted to me, but I was'told there was a Crown grant for it. As Mr. Bavin came to me as one of the public and not as client, I feel at liberty to make this explanation, after what has appeared in your paper.— am, &c., C. E. Button.
