COUNTY COUNCIL MEETINGS.

WHANGAREI.

A meeting of the Whangarei County Council was held on April 13. Present: Messrs. Brown (chairman), Wilson, Mallabond. Wolf, Carter, Hunter, Wakelin, McKay, and Mair (clerk and treasurer).

SPECIAL MEETING.

At the special meeting to consider the byelaws for regulating wheel traffic upon county roads, it was resolved, "That between the Ist days of May and November the weight carried by different vehicles should be as follows:—On 2i-inch tires, not over lOcwt, on unmetalled roads, and not over a ton on metalled ones, on each pair of wheels; on 34-inch tires, 15cwt on unmetalled roads, and a ton on metalled roads, for each pair of wheels. No timber waggon to bo allowed to carry over 1000 superficial feet of timber during said months at one load, and that no horse, cattle, or vehicle be drawn, led, or taken over any bridge of more than ten feet span at other than a walking pace, under a penalty of £5 for such offence, said penalty to be recovered in a summary manner under the Justice of the Peace Act, 1883, before two Justices of the Peace."

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of Council was then proceeded with. Mr. Mair read the minutes of previous meeting, which were confirmed. Correspondence Read. — betters were read from S. P. Smith, Assistant SurveyorGeneral, re deviation of road at Finlayson, Waipu ; from A. Jones re draining road into his garden; from Mr. James Baber re gum license; from Mr. E. Caller re repairing footpath in Bank-street: letter from Town Board, Whangarei, calling attention to dangerous state of footpath; from Mrs. H. North offering a site for a hospital, on certain conditions, to contain 5 acres of land; from Mr. Jones referring to rates in Mareretu paid in error. Tenders.—Maun No. 1, where required, tender for supply of gravel, delivered : E. 0. Weaver, per yard, 4s; labour per diem, 6s. David Cleary, per yard, 2s lOd; labour per diem, 6s. James Jackson, per yard, 2s lOd. Resolved, " That Mr. Cleary's tender be accepted." Accounts.—Accounts were passed amounting in all to £453 Ss Id. Resolved, "That the accounts be paid." Gumdigging Licenses.— That a petition be forwarded through the member (Mr. R. Thompson) to the House of Representatives, praving that power be granted to the different County Councils to deal with gumfields and gumdlggers." Footpaths.—Resolved, " That the Council grant all Town Boards within the county power to construct and keep in repair the footpaths on the county roads running through each town district." Slaughter-houses.—" That any holder of a slaughter-house license who shall allow any animal suffering from cancer to be slaughtered at such slaughter-house shall, upon the information of the inspector immediately forfeit his license, and the Council will not grant him another, and that the clerk at once give notice to all holders of slaughter-houses in the county to that effect; also, that our member of the House of Representatives be requested to have the Sheep Act so altered that the scab inspector or police be empowered to order the destruction at once of any animal so suffering, the carcass to be either burned or buried, and not given to pigs." Resolved, "That the chairman be authorised to have the petition printed, and to forward the same to the different Councils throughout the colony." Main Roads.—Resolved, " That the chairman and Mr. Wakelin be asked to wait on the sitting member to urge upon his notice the necessity of the Government contributing some assistance to the maintenance of the main roads in the county of Whangarei." Resolved, " That the next meeting of the County Council be held on the 18th May, being Friday, and that before the ordinary meeting a special meeting of the Council be held."— Correspondent, April 14.]
