We' may here say that general market absorption of imports is as a rale underestimated, for what is thought full stocks soon go, and as in the case of the Oazoaru, oversea arrivals are calculated on pretty closely.
Mack's starch is having a great ran, with stocks Ten? bare. In Ho aids there is a better demand for Teacher's whisky. Last mail brought advice of a penny per gallon rise in Lowndes'quotation for ram. Oats have quickly ran op to fall price?, some Southern grain dealer* refusing to quote; until the market is more denned. Maize is not worth more than 3*. A new competitor has Vdmed up in this grain, Natal. .South Africa, sending larze supplies to Melbourne. Milling wheat remains at 3s Id for good camples. Large business is going through. Potatoes are rising, and are worth £2 15s to £3 per ton. . Good quality bams and bacon are in demand, and until the new cure comes to market next month, price* are expected to be well maintained at their present full figures. In the local produce market prices remain the same as fait week. The large quantity of Taranaki batter costing to hand keeps the price of the be-: dairy butter at "d per lb wholesale and 9d per lb retail; while the Shell brand remains steady at It*! per lb wholesale and Is per lb retail. Eggs are scarce, and command Is 3d per dozen wholesale, and Is 6d per dozen retail
