TIMBER.
TO THE BDITOB. Sik,— paper of this morning states that Mr. Holdship has returned, for which we should be thankful; but much more so if he has failed to sell the birthright of the Aucklanders to the Australians. If he would now turn his undoubted abilities to the amalgamation of the companies, the reduction of needless expense, and the prevention of the insane competition which the directors of the various companies seem to think the acme of good management, he would earn (perhaps, not a big commission, but that which is of much greater value) the thanks of the future generations of Aucklanders, as one who had helped to preserve for their use and benefit the valuable forests and the timber industry.— am, etc., P.H.M
