BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETINGS.

« PARNELL. The ordinary meeting of the Parnell Borough Council was held last night at the Council Chamber, Manukau Road. .There were present, the Mayor (Mr. S. T. George), and Messrs. McLachlan, Gilmour, McConnell, Lyell, Gay, and McCabo. Garden Hose.—lt was decided in reference to a letter from Mr. M. Clark, requesting permission to use a garden hose, that in future people might have garden hose on condition that they attached a meter at their own expense, and that they pay Is 6d per, 1000 gallons for the water. ■ License Fees.—The Town Clerk wrote, stating that the City Council would not continue the payment of city license fees to suburban boroughs. The letter was received.

The Overdraft.—ln roply to a letter from the Council enclosing their resolution to strike a general rate of Is 3d in the £1 on the Ist of July, if an overdraft of £1200 was granted, the manager of the Colonial Bank of New. Zealand wrote, stating that ho would allow the Council an overdraft of £1200 on general account for one year, from the 31st of March last, on the distinct understanding that the Council would faithfully carry oufc its policy of retrenchment and strict economy, and would thus endeavour to reduce the overdraft to say £600 by the 31st of March, 1889. The letter was received.

Saturday Half Holiday.—The foreman of works wrote, on behalf of himself and fellow-workmen, that their weeks' work end at twelve o'clock on Saturday. They would begin work at half-past seven in the mornings, instead of at "eight o'clock as at present. The request was agreed to.

ONEHUNGA. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night. There were present : His Worship the Mayor (Dr. W. R. Erson, in the chair), Messrs. Goldsbury, Hills, Burden, Tapp, Jackson, Shal* drick, Clark, Hill. Right-of-way.—Miss Lundonwas granted permission for a right-of-way through her property. Street Obstruction.— was decided to take steps to have a furze obstruction adjoining Mr. J. B. Russell's property removed. , Pr,EASAjrT-STREET.Mr. Courtney wrote, stating that as the Council was unable to repair the street, he would undertake to pay half the cost of the repairs. The offer was accepted.

Blue Metal.—Mr. W. J. Bray wrote, offering to supply a small quantity of blue metal at the current rates. The Mayor moved that the offer be accepted at 6s per yard. Agreed to. Subsidy.—Mr. J. C. Gavin, Secretary to the Treasury, wrote stating he had remitted the sum of £106 16s Id, as subsidy under the Local Bodies, Finance and Powers Act. Manokbb Mountain. —The Mayor intimated that he had received a private communication from a gentleman relative to the Mangere Mountain, which was about to be handed back to Tawhiao, and which he hoped would be sot aside under the Domains Act. Mr. Lawry, M.H.R., who was present, was permitted to explain the object of his communication. He said he had been informed that it was probable the mountain would be placed under the provisions of the Domains Act, for the whole country. He thought it would be well if the Council would pass a resolution endorsing the wishes of the Mangere people that they agree with the proposal, as, in the event of its being handed over, Onehunga would have a good representation on the Domain Board. The Mayor moved, "That this Council would support the Mangere local authorities in their endeavour to have the Mangere mountain put under the Public Domains Act." Mr. Burden seconded the motion, which was carried. On the motion of Mr. Goldsbury the thanks of the Council were accorded to Mr. Lawry for the interest he had taken in the district.

Tenders.—The following tenders were received and accepted for the supply of scoria metul: —W. Brierly, 500 yards, at Iβ s£d per yard, for Boundary Road; W. J. Bray, 440 yards scoria ash, at Is and Is 8d per yard. Financial Statement.—The Town Clerk reported that at last meeting the balance to the credit of the borough was £309 0s 7d ; paid in during term, £268 18s 7d; paid away, £144 16a lid, leaving a credit balance amounting to £333 2s 3d. Finance Committee.— The Finance Committee reported that they had carefully perused Messrs. Brookfield and Son's account, and that they find the amount excessive, and recommend that Messrs. Brookfield and Son be applied to for a substantial reduction. The report was adopted. Streets Committjek.—The Streets Committee recommended as follows :—Re Plea-sant-street, they cannot recommend any expense in the present state of the borough finance. Re Slaughter-house Road, they had inspected, and found it in bad order, and directed the necessary repairs to be made. Rβ floodgate, that action be deferred until the completion of the repairs at present progressing. Rβ Commerce-street, they cannot recommend expenses, as it is a private street. Re water channels in Sel-wyn-street, that no steps be taken until the completion of the waterworks. Notices of Motion.—Mr. Clark gave notice to move at next meeting, " That in the event of the Gas Company refusing to reduce the price of gas the Council take into consideration the advisability of discontinuing the use of it." Mr. Jackson to move, "That the Town Clerk be instructed to keep the recreation, cemetery, and rifle range accounts separate and distinct, instead of in one general account as at present; and that in opening the new account the items of debit and credit be transferred from the present account to their proper places ;" also, " That tho finance committee be requested to consider and report the proper per centage of revenue to be allocated to the separate accounts of the recreation, cemetery, and rifle range reserves." Allen's Springs.—The Reserves Committee was instructed to engage an engineer to purchase and fix a pump at Allen's Springs.
