BAY OF ISLANDS AGRICULTURAL AND HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

The autumn show of the Bay of Islands Agricultural and Horticultural Society was held at Okaihau on Friday, March 23, and proved a great success. The weather was everything tflat could be desired, and the attendance was greater than on any previous occasion. The hall had been very tastefully decorated by Messrs. S. Merrick and D. M. Anderson with flags kindly lent by Mr. W. Irving for the occasion, and the exhibits were very judiciously arranged on tables running the full length of the hall, and made a very effective display. There was a slight falling off noticeable in the show of needlework, but this deficiency was more than counterbalanced by the marked improvement in the exhibits of apples, which proved to be the most attractive feature in the show, and certainly was very creditable. The vegetables were also very much superior to what had been expected, considering the prolonged drought that we had experienced for over two months previous to the show. The prize for bread was keenly contested, there being no fewer than twenty-five entries, all of which were of a very superior quality. The judges awarded two special prizes to Mrs. C. Williams for a loaf of white and brown bread respectively, made of locally-grown and ground wheat. The example set by Mr. Williams of growing his own flour should certainly be followed by other settlers, and thus encourage the erection of a grist mill in the neighbourhood. The show of live stock was deplorably weak, and, if the show is to be a success in this respect, settlers must try to overcome the diffidence that they show in exhibiting their live stock, as it is a well-known fact that there are both cattle and horses in the Bay of Islands county that will compare very favourably with similar stock in any part of the Province of Auckland. The Hokianga Brass Band wtia in attendance all day, playing lively and popular airs, which tended greatly to the enjoyment of those present. The thanks of the society are due to Messrs. Macky, Logan, Steen, and Co., Messrs. Smith and Caughey, Messrs. E. Porter and Co., and others for donations and special prizes. Thanks are also due to the judges for the painstaking and impartial manner in which they discharged their arduous duties.
