QUERIES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—-There has been a lot of correspondence in connection with the Licensing Commissioners. Now, a thought occurs to me in connection with these important proceedings, and I ask the following questions: What have brewers and publicans done to improve the condition of the working classes ? Are the homes of the working classes made mote comfortable by supporting the drink sellers ? Is trade improved by the money spent in drink instead of clothes, furniture, and food ? Are the articles sold by brewers and publicans worth the money that is spent on them? If brewers and publicans had to keep all the paupers, lunatics, and criminals they make, what would be the result financially ? If a church were composed of brewers, publicans, and their assistants, what influence would it exert on the community ? Do the wives of drinkers or abstainers get the worse treatment I am, &c., John Lamb. April 5, 1888.
