STEAMER SUNK IN THE WAIROA RIVER.

THE DURHAM RUNS INTO THE TANGIHUA.

[BY telegraph.—own correspondents.] Helensville, Saturday. The Durham, on the passage from Dargaville hence, early this morning ran into the steamer Tangihua, which was anchored in tho fair way of the channel of the Wairoa river, during a dense fog, The Durham was going only half speed, and had two men looking out. The master was at the helm. The mate only sighted the Tangihua, and passed word in time for orders to be executed to go astern. The Durham struck her abaft midships on the port coal bunkers, and she settled down by the stern as soon as the Durham got clear of the wreck. No persons were on board the Tangihua at the time— a.m. The Tangihua has been cautioned previously not to moor in the fairway. The weather was tolerably clear on leaving Mititai, but became very thick on crossing over to the ■other side towards Te Kopuru.

Wellington, Monday, 1.30 a.m. ! The Marine Department have received the following telegram from Kaipara:— "The s.s. Tangihua was run into and sunk by the s.s. Durham in a fop off Te Kopuru on Saturday morning. The Tangihua was at anchor. No lives lost."
