PONSONBY LICENSING ELECTION.
TO THB EDITOR. Sib,—Mr. Glover's letter in the Herald on the election does not " declare the thing plentifully as it is." On the contrary, it is a misrepresentation. Headers will now be surprised to learn that all the 4000 votes were by Ponsonby ratepaying electors without one exception. The said letter conveyed the impression that all were by outsiders. Again, nine-tenths of the 160 majority knew nothing at all about brewers, nothing whatever. And brewers did not help the majority; it would have been larger had they kept away and out. The vote did not turn on teetotaliem, and moderation in drinks merely ; it was in defence ot rights and liberties, the bold attempt of the teetotallers to force real men and moderatiets judged an impudent interference. Thoughtful, disinterested teetotallers also were opposed to the stupid extreme of compulsion. The Club Hotel is reckoned gentlemanly and orderly ; this reckoning does not appear in Mr. Glover'e letter.—lam, etc., W. E. Sadler.
