PUGILISM IN WANGANUI.

The Christchurch Telegraph has the fol

lowing :—" Pugilism bids fair to find a congenial home in Wanganui. As is now well • known, a prize fight between Slavin and Laing has been arranged to take place in that district on an early date. The Wan- ■. ganui people, or at least a portion of them, have bo far been imbued with admiration of the prize ring that they have decided that -the forthcoming exhibition of brutality shall not, if they can help it, want specta- - tors. They have, therefore, got up a petition, for presentation to the Mayor, asking him to proclaim the day of the fight a. public holiday. What success . their request may meet with it '* is impossible to say, but unless his Worship of Wanganui- misrepresent the burgesses of that town, we should not be surprised to : learn that their request had been complied with, and that full facilities have! been given to; the Wanganuites to witness the Brutal encounter between Slavin and Laing. We think that Parliament might now very well interfere to save certain people from themselves, and , pass an Act which would -put an end to prize fighting r in New Zealand. . As we said on a former occasion, we do not want professors of pugilism in this colony, and have no room for men who make their living by such means." _
