Sir Henry Parkes, replying to the dispatch of Lord Knutsford, Secretary of State for the Colonies, on the Chinese question, urges that immediate steps should be taken by the Imperial Government to open negotiations with China to prevent Chinese immigration to Australia. Sir Henry Parkes says that if protection cannot be afforded to the Australian colonies, the Parliaments of the colonies must bow to public opinion, and themselves devise some means to arrest the evil.

A MELBOURNE SCANDAL. Melbourne, April 5. Mrs. Rose, wife of the M.L.A. for North Melbourne, has instituted proceedings in the Divorce Court against her husband, alleging adultery on the part of Dr. Hose with a Mrs. Weeding, and a girl belonging to the church where Dr. Rose preached. The latter was co-respondent in the divorce petition Weeding v. Weeding some time ago. In that case the jury returned a verdict in favour of the petitioner, but the judge refused to grant a decree on. the ground that by cruelty he had driven to misconduct with the co-respondent.

PARLIAMENTARY CRISIS. Brisbane, April 5. Parliament has been dissolved, and the polling takes place from May 5 to the 26th. Parliament will meet on June 12. A vigorous anti-Chinese crusade is going on. VICTORIAN FARMERS AND PRO TECTION. Melbourne, April 5. The Farmers' Protection Association demand to be placed on an equal footing with trades and industries, and a series of resolutions have been passed on the subject. They ask for single electorates, that there be a bounty on wheat ex- • ported, 25 per cent, duty on imported grain, protection from adulteration and imitation, 25 per cent, on all imported* tock.

SIR S. SAMUEL'S RESIGNATION Sydney, April 5. The Daily Telegraph states that Sir Saul Samuel has resigned the office or! Agent-General for New South Wales. The Hon. Mr. Clarke, Minister of Justice, has been appointed, but it is not to be formally announced at present. The Government deny that there is any truth in the statement made by the Daily Telegraph this morning, to the effect that Sir Saul Samuel had resigned the Agent-Generalship.

DEFENCELESS ADELAIDE. Adelaide, April 5. Mr. Downes reports to the Govern lnent that Adelaide is the only vulner able point in Australia. The defences of Victoria are particularly effective.

BURGLARY IN MELBOURNE. Melbourne, April 5. The watchman on the premises of the theatre found a burglar working at the strong room last night. He fired, but the offender escaped.
