ATHLETIC SPORTS.

The weekly meeting of the Auckland Rugby Union's Committee of Management was held last evening. There was a full attendance of delegates, but little business was done beside determining - that the season should begin on the 21st instant. It was suggested that two Saturdays should be devoted to play club matches, and two to practice games for the forthcoming match with the English fifteen. On the j 14th instant the Auckland F.C. will hold a half-mile race for members, and the secretary will receive en tries at once. On Saturday next the Gordon, Grafton, and Ponsonby Clubs will hold practice matches, and the near approach of the Club fixtures will no doubt cause a large attendance. The North Shore Club held their annual races for players on the Takapuna racecourse on Saturday. Mr. E. W. Burgess handicapped the 21 competitors in both the quarter and half-mile events, and Mr. J. M. Sibbin acted as starter. The quarter-mile resulted in an easy win for A. Sims (36yds), T. Sullivan (41yds) being second, and" W. Wynyard (scratch) third. The half-mile race produced a fine struggle, A. Sims (59yd8) just winning by a foot from T. Sullivan (60yds) after a, splendid finish, A. G.ratten (54yds) getting third honours. Last night the following crews were picked for the Auckland Rowing Club club fours." The race will be rowed off in heats, the first of which will take place on the 14th inst. :—J. Baker (stroke), W. Hodgkins (3), T. F. Wallace (2), F. Scully (bow) ; C. C. Dacre (stroke), J. Ansenne(3), R. St. Clair (2), G. Burton (bow); T. Henderson (stroke), C. F. Minnitt (3), L. M. Myers (2), J. It. An interesting display of athletics and fymnastics was given yesterday evening by rofessor Carrollo and his pupils in the hall, Grey-street. There was a large attendance of members and spectators, and some excellent work on the bars, rings, &c., was gone through, while several very scientific bouts of boxing took place, Professor Carrollo and Messrs. Keesing, Dixon, and Brophy being the chief actors. The first regular meeting of the class is announced for Friday night.
