' i In shipping circles the holiday of Good Friday was strictly, observed yesterday work being entirely suspended on all the vessels in port. Except for the pleasureSeekers who patronised the railway employes' picnic to the Tamaki, or went on the excursion to St. Heliers Bay, promoted by the Ferry Company, there were but fewpersons to be seen about the wharves, though now and then some business man would stroll down and enquire " Any news of the mail steamer?" The excursion by the Northern S.S. Co.'s steamer Clansman, to Mahurangi Heads, which was announced to start at ten o'clock, attracted but a few passengers, and the com- I pany therefore decided to abandon the pro- | jected trip. . Captain Hutton, of the s.s. Richmond, reports that when he left Papeete the British ship Shannon, Captain Mitchell, with 1400 tons coal on board, was lying at Papeete, having put into that port in a leaking condition. Captain Mitchell and his crew were busy unloading the ship to try and discover the leak. In the stream to the westward of Queenstreet Wharf the schooner Maile is lying ready to sail to Tonga and the islands, while the mission schooner Southern Cross is awaiting the arrival of the mail steamer to start on her cruise to Norfolk Island, New Hebrides, and other groups. At an early hour yesterday morning the s.s. Douglas arrived from the Bay of Plenty with a cargo of grain and produce. She was followed by the lona from the Great Barrier, while the Clansman, from Northern ports, got in at I] a.m. The Douglas will sail for Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty to-day at 3 o'clock, but the lona and Clansman will remain in port until Tuesday. The latter will act as flagship at the Ponsonby Regatta on Monday. At an early hour on Friday morning the Government steamer Stella arrived in pore from the East Coast after a stormy passage, during which she had to take shelter twice. She is berthed at the Railway Wharf. The Northern S.S. Co.'s Gairloch's time of departure from Onehunga to Taranaki has been postponed until Monday, at one o'clock, i*it which hour she will sail for New Ply- ' mouth. _________ ARRIVAL OF THE RICHMOND. Shortly before two o'clock this morning, the Island steamer Richmond came into port from her usual trip among the Islands, with several passengers and a mixed cargo. Captain Hutton reports of the round voyage as follows : The s.s. Richmond left Auckland on Saturday, February 25th, at 10 o'clock p.m., for her usual trip to the South Sea Islands. After a quick and pleasant passage, Tonga was reached on Friday morning, 2nd March. Discharged cargo, and left next day for Samoa, calling en route at Vavau to land passengers. Samoa was reached on the €th instant at daybreak ; found everything quiet. The U.S. Mohican and two German men-of-war were at anchor in Apia harbour. Xanded cargo and passengers, and left for Papeete on the Bth instant, arriving there on .the 14th instant at 2 p.m., after a very fine weather passage. Landed stock and cargo, •and left for l'apara on the 17th, to load ; took on board line cargo of oranges, cocoa nuts, etc., and left for Rarotonga on the 39th at daylight. Arrived at Rarotonga on [Thursday, the 22nd instant. Took on board the balance of our cargo of cotton, and left the same day for Auckland at 2 p.m. Light variable winds and smooth sea were experienced until the 27th, when we encountered a hard S.W. gale with tremendous sea, which lasted until the evening of the 29th.
