DEVONPORT WATER SUPPLY.
TO THE ECITOR. Sir, —A short time I saw a letter in your paper from Mr. Knox charging Mr. Bartley with certain things that I am confident are not correct. First, that the rateEayers of Devonport rejected him. Now, ir, how could he bo rejected when many of the ratepayers knew nothing of the election until it was over, as it was seemingly kept secret, and only known to the favoured few, who had it all their own way? He also charges Mr. Bartley with being the cause of his obnoxious water scheme being rejected by the ratepayers. Mr. Bartley has not been the cause. Free and independent ratepayers were dead against the water scheme ; the Ferry Company and clique are in favour of it, so that they may have cheap water. How very kind of ratepayers to supply this monopoly with water at yearly instead of consumers' rate, and drain the racecourse. Really, Sir, their kindness knows no bounds. Mr. Bartley has had an honourable professional career, and all his undertakings will compare favourably with the Newmarket water scheme carried out by Mr. Knox.— am, &c., J- H. Hannait.
