BOARD OF EDUCATION.

In consequence of to-morrow being Good Friday, the Board of Education held their regular meeting yesterday afternoon. Mr. S. Luke presided, and Messrs. Moat, Udy, Upton, Cooper, Goldie, and Carr were also present. Chairman's Report.—The chairman's usual report dealt with routine business, and also stated that Mr. J. J. Poland, assistant master at the Devonport school, had resigned. The report was adopted. Tenders.—Tenders were received as follows for the painting of the Mangere school :— G. Blakey, £1 '2 ; C. H. Bottrill, £14 10s ; H. Morris, £24 10s. The tender of Mr. Blakey was accepted. The Assistant Teaciiership, Girls' High School.—As already notified, a committee of the Board recommended that the,appointment of first assistant teacher at the Girls' High School be tendered to Miss Beatrice E. Gibson, 8.A., of Christchurch Girls' High School. The Board telegraphed to Miss Gibson intimating that owing to the action of the Government in withdrawing the grant for the Girls' High School the Board were not prepared to guarantee that, if she accepted the position, she would be retained in their employment after December next. To this Miss Gibson had replied by telegraph as follows : — " Could not

accept appointment if not permanent. Regret unavoidable delay." Mr. Goldie was of opinion that the appointment should be given to some teacher at present in the employ of the Board. The Chairman thought that it might be offered to Miss Wallace. The subject was again referred to the Girls' High School Visiting Committee.

School Fund Accounts.—Mr. L. A. Durrieu, auditor for the Board, reported that he had audited the school fund accounts for 1887, and the abstracts of the school fund accounts for the year ending 31st of December, ISB7, are as follow :— Receipts.—Balance in bank and in hand on Ist January, 1887, £1371 2s 8(1. Receipts from Education Board : (1), grants for ordinary incidental purposes, £3525 Ss lOd ; (2), grants for special purposes, £970 (is 2d. Donations, subscriptions, etc., from others than Education Board : (1), for general purposes, £21 16s 6d ; (2), for special purposes, £142 2s 3d. Receipts from other sources, £143 8s 4d; debtor balances, £30 lis : total £6510 10s 9d.

Expenditure.—Cleaning school sand outbuildings, £2173 2s 2d ; fuel for school use and light, £303 16s 4d ; repairs to buildings, fences, and furniture, £930 Is 3d; books, maps, and furniture, £213 4s 2d; expenditure of special grants from Board, £923 13s 7d. Expenses of committee— viz.,printing, £16 13s 6d; advertising, £19 19s Sd; stationery, postage, and telegrams, £47 12s 7d ; expenditure on other objects, £641 13s lid; Cr. balances, £1240 13s 7d • total, £6510 10s 9d.

Miscellaneous.—lt was resolved to pay half the cost of painting the Hamilton East School. The request of the Hikutaia residents that a separate school district be formed, was referred to the school committee. The Board agreed to grant half the cost of painting the Hunua School. The consideration of the question of affording additional school accommodation at Mount Eden was deferred. A request for the erection of a teacher's house at Ohinewai was declined. It was decided to open a _ half-time school at Whatipu. Other minor applications were dealt with. Headmastersiiip, Nelson-street SCHOOL. The City Schools Committee wrote, recommending that Mr. Bartholomew Cronin, 8.A., be appointed headmaster of the Nel-son-street school. Tho recommendation was adopted. Mount Albert -School.— the appointment of Mr. Cronin to Nelsonstreet, there will be a vacancy in the headmastership of the Mount Albert school; and it was decided to invite applications for the position, to be sent in by Wednesday next.

Napier-street School. — The recommendation of the City Schools Committee that Misses M. Blades, L. Bell, M. Edwards, A. Bottrill, and A. Edwards be appointed to the new Napier-street school, was also agreed to, and it was resolved to appoint Misses Macky and Greatbatch to the Nelson-street school.

Other Appointments.—Miss Bailey was appointed to the Puni School, and Miss Bennett to Opua, It was agreed that Messrs. Lane and Murray, probationers, be removed from the Ponsonby School to that at Beresford-street.
