THE GOVERNMENT AND HARBOUR BOARDS.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

Wellington, Wednesday. Mr. HiGcnfSOK, M.E., has been appointed by the Government to make inquiries into the Gisborne Harbour Board and report thereon. Mr. leaves next week. Writing to the Post in reference to the action of the Government regarding the West Coast Harbour Boards, Mr. Ft. If. Reeves, member for Inanpahua, says:—"l think it will be found in a short time that the object of the Premier in insisting on the abolition of the Grey and Westport Harbour Boards, and making them colonial works, is simply a dorlgo in order that the abolition may be taken as a precedent, so that the Taranaki Harbour Board may be taken over as colonial works. I contend that there is no valid cause for complaint against either of the two first-named Boards to justify such an extreme measure as the abolition of those bodies. They have done this work far better than it could have been done under the Public Works Department, and I again say the only object to lie attained is as first suggested, viz., to enable the New Plymouth works to be taken over."
