Our Waipu own correspondent writes:— The serious charge preferred against Archibald Douglas, of assaulting a servant girl of Mr. H. N. Simpson, of this place, has created quite a sensation. Mr. Douglas is an old man residing with his son, who carries on the business of saddler, and is a man of respectable antecedents and liberal education. The alleged assault is said to have been committed at a well common to Simpson and Douglas, where the girl waa washing linen. A large portion of the people believe that he is innocent. Mr. O'Meagher arrived heye on Saturday to conduct the prosecution, "while Mr. Killen is retained for tne defence.
