About 6 o'clock yesterday evening the mail steamer Mariposa proceeded to San Francisco with the outward mail for Europe and America. She took a large number of passengers from this port, and a considerable quantity of cargo. Shortly after nine o'clock yesterday forenoon the Union S.S. Co.'s Manapouri arrived from Melbourne via Hobart and the South. She brings a large number of passengers and ft general cargo. In addition to the imports mentioned above, the steamer lias on board the Auckland portion of the Selenibria's and lonic's cargoes. Of the trip from Melbourne Mr. Hudson, the purser, reports :—Left Melbourne on the 14th inst.; called at Hobart, The Bluff, Dunediu, Lyttelton, Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne, leaving the latter port on the 26th inst. at 8.30 a.m.; rounded East Cape the same afternoon at 3 o'clock, and passed liritiri on the 27th at) 8 a.m., and berthed as above. The barque Sharpshooter has finished discharging her inward cargo of sugar, and yesterday entered out at the Customs for Newcastle, where she will load coal. This morning the three-masted schooner Waireka will be taken from her berth at the Queen-street wharf and placed on Mr. C. Bailey's slip to be re-coppered. The schooners Gael and Curlew were busy discharging their cargoes of produce at the Queen-street wharf yesterday. The ship Waitangi is now ready for sea, and will take her departure on Thursday next. Mariners who cruise in the Hauraki Gulf are warned by the Customs authorities of a dangerous natch of rocks lying between Wekarua Island and a smaller one close to the mainland at Manaia, Coromandel. This patch is about '20 feet in diameter, and is particularly dangerous, as it is just about six feet below the water level at low tide. Rather unexpectedly the Rotomaliana, from Sydney, came into port yesterday evening about 9 o'clock. We arc indebted to Mr. Keith, purser, for the following particulars The Rotomahana sailed from Sydney oil the 23rd at 4.45 p.m., and experienced fine weather with moderate head winds throughout the passage. She breasted the Three Kings on the. 27tli at 3 a.m., and rounded ISforth Cane at 6.40 a.m., passing Cape Brett at 0.40 p.m., and arriving as above. On the voyage from Russell to Sydney the Rotomahana made a remarkably smart passage, of three davs twelve hours, logging on two consecutive days 347 and 332 knots respectively, while the trip back has also been a speedy one of four days two and three-quarter hours. We learn that the close season for rock oysters in the County of Coromandel has [ been extended till the 31st March, I Yesterday evening the Northern S.S. Co.s steamers Clansman and lona rook their departure for Russell and Mercury Bay respectively. The brigantine Forest King, which came here with sugar, has completed her discharge, and will load up with timber at this port for Sydney. This forenoon the warships Calliope and Swinger will take their departure from Auckland on a cruise to Southern ports. The Calliope will proceed to Lyttelton. while the Swinger's first port of call will be \\ ellington. H. M.s. Diamond will also leave this morning, sailing for Hobart. At the Railway Wharf yesterday the Colonial Union Co.'s steamer Bay ley began to discharge her inward cargo, and by nightfall had got rid of nearly all her deck coal. During yestcrdav the Government steamer Stella was engaged in grappling for am' lifting the cable which used to connect the battery at Fort Cautlev with the southern side of the harbour at Kohimarama. After considerable trouble, the heavy wire, over two miles in length, was safely got on board. It is proposed to use it in conncction with the defence works at Lyttelton. The Stella took on board a quantity of gun cotton from the Customs launch, in the stream, for conveyance to the South. This morning she will start on a round trip to the lighthouses and beacons, calling at tne Spit, Tiri, Mokohinau, Bav of Islands, Kaipara, and Manukau. The s.s. Helens ville, February 27.— barque Vivid was towed here yesterday from the Kaipara Heads by the tugboat Durham, and will commence to load at once at the Helensville Timber Company's mill for Launceston. The Durham on Saturday last towed to sea the barque John Knox, which loaded at the Makarau for Melbourne, and the Norwegian barquentine India loaded at the New Zealand Timber Company's mill, Port Albert, for Sydney. The schooner Glencairn ; which brought Whangarei coal here for the Northern River Steam Navigation Company's steamers, is loading timber at the mill. Aratapu, February 26. — The barque Wenona is the only vessel loading here at present Tk Kopuru, February 27.— brig Vision, loading for Sydney, is not quite a full ship. The barque Waitemata, having completed her loading for Melbourne, was towed yesterday to the Heads, from whence she took her departure the following tide, getting to sea promptly with her usual good iortune.
