FREIGHTS, &c. Messrs. C. F. James and Co., ship and timber brokers, report as foilows — Chartering. — There has been a fair amount done in this during the month that has elapsed since our last report, and we are glad to be able to report that the scarcity of vessels is at _ length giving an upward tendency to freights. Shippers are, in consequence, anxious to charter ahead of immediate requirements when possible. Freights.—West Coast to Sydney, baulk 3s 3d, ditto Melbourne 3s 9d; sawn, West Coast to Sydney 2s 9d, ditto to Melbourne 3s 6d; from East Coast, sawn to Sydney 2s 6d, Melbourne 3s 3d.
Coals.—Arrivals have been only the fixtures of the previous month, viz : the Three Cheers, Northern Chief, Look Out, and s.s. Janet Nicoll, the two latter in to us, and the Linda Weber with a cargo of Brisbane coal. Fixtures during the present month have been Eileen Donan and Three Cheers for the Gas Company, with Jessie, Lady Mabel, and Defiance chartered through us for the local trade. Freights are firm at Ss. Timber.— month closes with a rather easier feeling, hardly justified, we think, by the position of the market. Negotiations arc still proceeding with a view to the purchase of a large proportion of the timber interest by a Melbourne syndicate. We quote : Baulk from West Coast ports, at 4s 6d to4s9d; East Coast, 5s to 5s 3d, according to quality. Grain. —Freightbusiness in this has been confined, owing to its being the slack season, almost entirely to steamers, the only arrivals being the Mimiha and Gael. We quote freights nominally at Bs, with an. upward tendency.
