BANKRUPTCY.

DEBTOR'S EXAMINATION.

J. Leith.John Leith, bankrupt, was examined yesterday by Mr. J. Lawson, Official Assignee. He said he had been for several years in Government employ as lighthouse-keeper, but had to relinquish this position in consequence of age, receiving a retiring allowance of £95. He removed to Auckland, and after being for seven weeks without employment, he leased for 21 years a farm of 101 acres at Whangamarino, at a rental of £41 per annum. Debtor took over the live stock and farming utensils for £95 —£50 at once, and the balance by an I. O.U. The land, however, did not prove to be what was expected, and a butchering business, which was connected with the farm, proved very limited and unprofitable. The crops failed, and recognising that the venture was a hopeless one, the debtor filed a petition in insolvency. His liabilities were £171 lis 6d, including £82 0s 6d owing to his son,' who had lent him the sum stated in order that he might furnish his dwelling-house, etc. The assets of the estate were £80.

MEETING ADJOURNED. W. and J. Bekhan.—A meeting of the creditors of W. and J. Beehan was called for this morning, but in consequence of the paucity of the attendance? an adjournment was made until March 2.
