THE WRITER OF THE TEMPERANCE COLUMN DRUNK.
A country paper in Missouri, in apologising for the absence of its temperancecolumn, says :—" It was our intention to have a full temperance column this week, but we have been disappointed. Some time ago we engaged Colonel to uo this work, and we flatter ourselves that he made his department fairly sing with life, and let us remark here that everything about- this paper hums a lively tune. At times it may have seemed that the Colonel was a little too radical in his views and somewhat too vigorous in his expression, but we feel that"all fair-minded men will overlook these faults, if they be faults. When he declared that all .manufacturers of whiskey were thieves, and that all whiskey sellers were cut-throats, lie may have been a little too pungent ; still we think that all unbiassed men will, after giving the subject due consideration, agree with him. As we stated above, it was our intention to give a full column this week, with a few extra strong pointers of which we have become possessed, but the truth is, the Colonel is too drunk this week to do the matter justice. There's no use in talking, a man can get so drunk that while his views may remain good, his style becomes involved. We deeply regret the Colonel's indisposition this week, but we promise that he shall make his department doubly interesting when he gets sober. Hereafter, if our patrons will give us sufficient encouragement, we will give two columns of temperance matter instead of one. We are much interested in the great cause, and earnestly hope to sea it flourish."'
