The microphone reoeiver used by Profeisor Lucien J. Blake in hie experiments in submarine telephony on the Wabash River,, consisted of a diaphragm and carbon buttonii of a peculiar formation. The buttons were made of fine granules of retort oarbon plated with copper, then with silrer, and finally with platinum. These grains were mixed with rubber cement and n set of hard elastic balls about tho size of peas. Thick discs were moulded from the compound, and ineluded in a voltaio circuit with a bell telephone. A diaphragm to receive the subaqueous vibration was placed against them. The arrangement proved very sensitive in water, sonorous vibrations being received by it for 1& mile under the surface of the Wabash. The initial vibrations were produoed under the water by a locomotive bell. .
