THE TOURIST TRAFFIC.

182 telegraph,—own correspondent.]

Rotorua, Friday. We have to-day sixty tourists in our midst.

ASSAULTING A POLICEMAN.

[by telegraph.—press association.] Napier, Friday. The R.M. Court was occupied to-day in hearing a charge against two women and two men of a serious assault on Constable Carmody on New Year's Eve. The policeman was in plain clothes, watching a gang of larrikins. He followed one across a vacant section, when he was set upon by the youth, his father, and two females. The constable remained in bed for ten days afterwards, and has not yet fully recovered. The elder man, named Roulston, was fined £10 and costs. The younger man was dismissed, as it appeared that whin he knew Carmody was a policeman he tried to stop any further assault by his father. The women also got off, as it was not shown that they were awaro it was a policeman who was being assaulted.
