AUCKLAND TIMBER COMPANY'S ACCIDENT BENEFIT SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the above Society. wa9 held in one of the company's buildings, Customs-street, at half-past twelve yesterday, The chairman of Committee, Mr. Thos. Henry White, presided, and there were about 60 members present.

The Chairman, in opening the meeting, congratulated the members on the sue* ces»ful working* of the Sooiety for the past year, as after paying all expenses and reserving the sum of £20 14s lid to carry forward for next year, the committee were in a position to pay back to members a dividend of 23s for every 26s subscribed, or a fraction less than lid for every shilling, so that the total cost to members for the benefits they were entitled to receive was a little over a half-penny per week. He regretted that all the employes had not joined the society, and srged them to do so next year. He pointed out that of the money paid away for relief more than three fourths had been received by employe* who were in no way connected with the machine department, This, he considered, was due to the precautions taken by the company in guarding the employes from injury by casing up machines, boxing up belts, etc. When the extent of the works was considered, and the large number of machines they had running, he thought they were extremely fortunate in having so few accidents. He referred with pleasure to the notice that had been posted up requesting employes to call the manager's attention to any portion of the plant that might be con* sidered dangerous, so that every precaution for safety might be taken. He spoke highly of the manner in which the secretary, Mr. A. Neil, and the treasurer, Mr. H. Smith, had performed their duties, and considered that the sucoess which had attended the society was In a great measure due to their exertions. BALp NCE-BHEET.
