OPOTIKI TOWN DISTRICT BOARD.

The general monthly meeting wm held on Wednesday, Ootober 26. . Present t Henna. H; G W»*a>sley, W. Law, J. C Arthur, and Alfred Parkinson. Mr. Walmsley was elected chairman of the meeting in the absence of Mr. Wright. Replugi to last month's correspondence and special correspondence were read, discussed, and ap. proved. The following letters were received and considered :-Prom the Crown Lands Office, stating that an application had been received privately to purchase lot 32 section 2, town of Opotiki, and asking whether r the same is required for public purposes. Resolved. " That a reply be sent, to the effeot that this Board has no recommendation to make, but that in the event of that or any other landi being put up for sale at any time in future, that the same be offered by auction in Opotiki and not in Auckland as hitherto, owing to the expense incurred by Opotiki residents in attending or employing agents to attend the sale." From Messrs. Hesketh and Richmond, enclosing a draft of by-laws for the consideration of the Board, with their opinions thereon ; also explaining the necessary steps for legalising the new by-laws when approved of. The proposed alterations in by-laws were then read over and discussed at considerable length. Resolved, "Thac a reply be sent to Messrs. Hesketh and Richmond, stating that, in the opinion of the Board, their letter of September 14th is most unsatisfactory, and desiring them to give a daoided opinion as to whether the by-law affecting persons occupying premises of a less tenancy than six months can be enforced or not, this being the portion considered so unsatisfactory by the Board, not expressing a decided opinion." Resolved, " That a letter be written to Wm. Kelly, M.H.R., describing what steps the Board have taken with regard to obtaining a daily letter delivery in the township, and the results arrived at so far, and asking him I to undertake to represent the matter in the proper quarter, with a view to securing this privilege for the township." Resolved, "That two more street lamps be ordered from Mr. Webb, and erected upon the two remaining lamp posts ; also, that the posts be w«ll painted with two coats of paint." Mr. Law proposed, Mr. Walmsley seconded, " That a general rate of three-farthings in the £ upon all rateable property in the town district be now struck and confirmed in accordance with the notice of motion at last monthly meeting, and as publicly notified in the Opotiki Herald ; that the same be payable in one instalment on the 21st day of November, at the office of the collector, Mr. C. D. Litchfield. Resolved, "That tenders be called for the maintenance of the six lamps for a period of six months from November 1, tenders receivable on Monday, the 31st October ; and that the Surface Committee be authorised to open, and accept or decline at their discretion." Carried. Messrs. Wright and Walmsley were appointed Surface Com*' mittee tor the current month. The following accounts were received :-R. 0. Clark, drain pipes, £22 13a; J. Bates, printing and advertising, £1 2a 6i ; Jas. Busst, lamp sontract, £10 15s lOd ; C. D. Litchfield, commission contract, £1 Hi ; C. D. Litchfield, . quarter's salary, £5 ; John Webb, lamp, £2 15s 6d ; Thos. Parkinson, surface work, £9 on 6d ; C. Hennessey, Nelson-street contract, £26 2s 6d ; C. Hennessey, refund deposit, £2 103 ; petty cash, £2. The whole of these were passed tor payment. The clerk laid a statement before the Board re Bale of drain pipes. Resolved, "That the clerk colleot all accounts due for pipes supplied to private individuals by the Board, as per statement produced."
