THE HARBOUR WARD LEASES.

A deputation" comprising Messrs. L. Green, Hermann Brown, and John Buchanan, waited upon the Harbour Board yesterday with respect to the question of the Harbour Board leases, and the reduction of rates, which baa been requested for some time past.

Mr. (iRKE" stated the business of the imputation, pointing out that they bad eomo to request the Board to apply to the Governor-in-Council that be would bring the Public Bodies Leases Act into operation in Auckland. He referred to what had been done in this direction at Westlaud, and dealt with the remarks in the House of Mr. Fulton, Sir Robert Stout, and Mr. Montgomery, tho former having remarked that it was " notorious that there were hundreds of cases of Crown tenant* unable to pay their leases." He spoke of what had taken place in Ireland, referring to Griffith's valuation and the .Land Bill of IS3I, and said that 111080 leasing properties from the Harbour Board were unable to secure any income from their land because of excessive valuation. The speaker urged that the Board, would again consider this matter, and, if possible, effect an amioable arrangement. Messrs. Buchanan and Bkow.v spoke iu a similar strain. ,

The Chaikman said that nothing could bo done iu the matter that day, as the previous resolution of the Board could only bo r«voked by giving notice of motion. Ho therefore suggested that they should write to the Board on the subject. The deputation agreed to take this step. Mr. Nathan asked whether the leaseholders wished only a temporary reduction of the rates, or did they require the conditions of the leases to be permanently altered ? Mr. BroWN said that the leaseholders asked for a permanent alteration in the rates.

The deputation then withdrew.
