NEW ZEALAND RADICAL REFORM LEAGUE.
The members of the above sooiety met in the Excelsior Hall on Monday evening; Dr. Beale in the chair. The attendance was good, considering the quiet naturally following the heat and exoitement of an election contest. Several new members were proposed and elected. The secretary stated that he bad forwarded to members of the Cabinet the resolution passed at the last meeting, urging the Government to seriously consider the question of depression arising from the continued appreciation of the standard of value. Letters in acknowledgment had been reoeived from the Hon. the Colonial Secretary, and the Hon. J. A. Tole. A resolution, proposed by Mr. Duff us, was unanimously agreed to, "That this League heartily congratulate Sir George Grey npon his reatoralion to health, and trust he may long be spared to champion the Liberal cause. Mr. H, W. Farnall gave notice of motion, " That, in the opinion of this League, a Bill should be introduced to amend the Representation Act, in order to impose a heavy penalty upon any candidate for a seat in Parliament, who, either personally or through agents, canvass an elector for his vote. That committees formed in the interests of candidates, for the purpose of soliciting votes should be prohibited ; and the League is also of opinion that taking a show of hands on the nomination day in directly opposed to the spirit of the ballot, and should be forthwith discontinued." It was decided that the League should hold its meetings at shorter intervals during the Parliamentary session ; the next meeting to be held on Monday, October 17- Several suggested alterations in the rules of the society wore referred to the Emergency Committee to consider and report upon. A proposal to alter the name of the society was rejected. _____
