SIR MAURICE O'RORKE.
TO THS EDITOR. Sir, —In your issue of Monday " A Mannkau Elector" expresses his surprise at what he is pleased to term 11 the jaunty remarks" of 'Sir Maurice O'Rorke at the declaration of the poll at Onehunga on Friday last, and speaks of the worthy Knight's "narrow escape of (sic) defeat at the hands of a stranger." Now, Sir, I think " Manukan Elector" should have thought twice before speaking once. Any one who knows Sir Maurioe will readily admit that to be "jaunty" on any occasion is foreign to his nature, and on the occasion referred to it must be said that he proved himself to be what I regret to say his opponent, by his un warranted and scurrilous abuse of individual electors, and of the Auckland Press, proved himself not to be, i.e., a gentleman 1 There can be no doubt but that . Mr. Osborne's defeat came both to bim and his supporters in the nature of a big surprise, and, like the triumphs (narrow though some of them were) of many other of the piok of our New Zealand legislators over the machinations of roll-stuffers aud paid touts, Sir Maurice's return serves to prove that after all there is something more than theory in the law of the survival of the fittest. Amid the wreck caused by the late general election, beneath the wave of which some of our best and most capable men were, thanks to the vote of a floating population, temporarily engulphed and their places filled (bless the mark 1) by untried and inexperienced aspirants for fame—and the honorarium surely it is some consolation for Sir Maurice O'Rorke to feel that the intelligence of the Manukau electorate has sent him back to the House to watch their interests in the future »s he has ever done in the past.— lam, etc., Old Onkhonga.
