ONEHUNGA.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held in the Coanoil Chamber last night There were present : His Worship the Mayor (Dr. W. G. Scott), Messrs. Jackson, Wilson, Keehan, Hills, Tapp, Shaldriok, Hill, and Kowe. Allen's Springs Rkskrvk. — Mr S. Bright wrote, stating that he would band over the borough reserve held by him at present. The Town Clerk intimated that Mr. Bright, through his solicitor, had offered to hand over the reserve without prejudice on payment of the sum of £50, but had sinoe seen fit to offer it without recompense. After a lengthy discussion, Mr. Jackson moved, seconded by Mr. Shaldrick, that the matter be referred to the Reserves Committee to report upon. The ToVn Clerk to take to action for recovery of rent, pending the reanlt of inquiries. Carried. Borough Building Site.— Mr. J. G. Gillilaud wrote asking to leaxe a site on the borough reserve fronting Queen-street, on which to erect au office as a news agency. The Mayor moved, seconded by Mr. Keehan, that the Town CUrk supply the applicant with information re Borough reserve building allotment oonditions. Mr. Jackson moved, seconded by Mr. Shaldrick, that the application be referred to the Reserves Committee. The amendment was carried on division.

Financial statement. —The Town Clerk reported the balance to tho credit of the Borough fund at the la«t meeting to be 5) lid, paid in daring the term, £4 8s 9J ; paid away, £17 2» 9 I ; leaving a debit balance of £12 8s Id, with liabilities under contrnot amounting to £196 10s. Accounts.—A number of aocoanti ware pasaeO fur payment. Bukokss Koll Claim.—The application of Mr. Kelly to have his name placed on the burgess roil, was referred to the Reserves Committee to report upon. Road JFokmvtion. — the motion of Mr. Jackson, seconded bv Mr. Shaldriok, the petition of the Upper Queen-street residents, to have the road repaired and a footpath formed, was referred to the Streets Committee.

fc-XTKV COURT-HOOSB ACCOMMODATION. — Mr. Jackson moved, upon notice, " That the attention of the Hon. the Minister of Justice be called to the very great loan and inconvenience tjp which the residents of this borough and the neighbourhood are pat by the infrequent sittings of the Resident Magistrates Court, and this Council urges the necessity of a return to the forner practice of holding weekly sittings." In moving the resolution, ha thought that there was a necessity fir having a Resident Magistrate—witnout reflecting in the slightest upon the J ustioes of the Peace—who occupied the bench at times. The Magistrate who attended this borough ia a resident of Papakara, and therefore Onehunga was in a subordinate position, and that should not be. It was an old seaport town, and oases were continually arising, bat there was no Justice at hand, Only a few weeks ago there were several oases before the Court, and seven legal gentlemen were present, but, to the astomatimenc of all, the Magistrate had to adjourn at an early hour an important case, and leave by steamer for Waiuku, district seemed to be more important than Otehunga. Mr. Sbaldrick seconded' the motion. The Mayor and Mr. Wilson spoke strongly in favour of the motion, which was agreed to. Waterworks Question. —Mr. Shaldriok moved, " I hat the information prepared by a committee stating a case for the solicitor in connection with the validity of the waterworks contract, be placed before the Council prior to it# going before the solicitor." Mr. Wilson seconded the motion, and informed the Council that it was the intention of the committee to place the matter before the Council. Motion lost.

Borough Handcart.—Mr.Keehan moved, seconded by Mr. Hill, "That tenders be called for the supply of a handcart for the borough workmen." The motion was lost, or Motion.—Mr. Wilson gave notice to move at next meeting, That the motion standing on the boobs of the Council with reference to the erection of a bathing place within the borough limits be rescinded, and that the question of providing bathing accommodation, and fixing a site for such purpose, be referred to the Reserves Committee to report at next meeting of the Council; " also, " That, as the Council has set a precedent in the matter, all accounts hitherto passed and ordered to be held over for payment pending the waterworks account being in funds, be paid forthwith out of the ordinary funds of the borough." Mr. Tapp to move, "That office furniture be provided for the convenience of the reporters, as at present there is no accommodation whatever lor the press representatives."
