FINANCIAL REFORM ASSOCIATION.
A public meeting was held on Saturday night at the Newmarket Hail with a view of forming a branch of the Political Reform Association in that district. There were very few present at the time appointed, and in the absence of the Mayor of Newmarket, Mr. F. G. Clayton was called to the chair. The Chairman read the advertisement, and opened the meeting. Mr. Theo. Cooper said that owing to the thin attendance he suggested, after a consultation as to its desirability, that this meeting should be postponed, as the meeting was not one affecting the candidature of any person in the present election, and it would be better to defer it until after the turmoil of the election had ceased. It was too much to expect that they could get a representative meeting for a purpose which although its object was one of general interest; was not affecting any particular candidate. What was wanted was to establish a branch of the Political Financial Reform Association in Newmarket, and in order to get a reflex of public opinion it was desirable that they should have a representative attendance, and they may get that next week. He therefore moved that the meeting scand back until Tuesday next. Mr. McLachlan seconded the motion for adjournment. Mr. Jenkins moved as an amendment that the meeting proceed, and this was agreed to. Mr. Tbeo. Coopar, in an able address, moved " That the expenditure in connection with the Government of the colony, is excessive and far beyond its necessities and requirements." Mr. F. Cherry seconded the motion, and spoke at some length in support of it, and on being put to the meeting it was carried. Mr. E. W. Burton then moved " That it is desirable to form a branch of the Auckland Financial Reform Association in Newmarket.'' Mr. Buttle seconded the resolution. Mr. Jenkins moved as an amendment, "That in consequence of the smallness of the audience, the present meeting bo adjourned," and this being agreed to, a vote of thanks was accorded to the chairman, and the meeting terminated.
