THE CROYDON DIGGINGS.

A Queensland paper contains the following respecting the Croydon diggings in that colony:—"We reached Croydon next day, travelling in water all the time. The reefs here are turning out well, and all the crushings yet put through have been satisfactory. What strikes one as strange on this goldfield is the fact that there are many ' floating patches,' which are very rich ; one bit of a ' floater' crushed the other day gave the owners £700 a man ; they had 45 tons of atone, which yielded at the rate of 13oz 7dwt per ton, worth £3 13s per oz, and they expect to get 90 tons more. New reefs are being discovered overy day, and 1 think from all I can see that there is no doubt about the permanency of the field, nor that it will be a very extensive one. There are now considerably over 2000 men on the field, and when the roads are trafficable there will be 5000 or more. P.S.—Maroh 28': No mail in or out yet; some 40 boarders are turned away from where I am staying to-night, all the provisions being done and none to be got In the town. Things are very serious; 2000 men and no rations is a dangerous element. However, there is one thing; there has not been a glass of grog of any kind in Croydon for some time. To-day has been fiue, and if it will keep so for another ten days plenty of the necessaries of life will come in."
