COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office, j Thursday evening. Business generally is rather better, and a more active enquiry for Imports is being ex. perlenced. Stooks are not heavy, and many lines are absolutely short. This fact is giving a better tone to the market, and the law of supply and demand is regulating prices rather in favor of holders. There are few items in market movements worthy of special mention. Pepper is slightly easier. Hudson's Extract of Soap is being quoted at a trifling advance, the overstook being largely oleared by shipments South. The spot demand is not quite so good, owing to the greater cheapness of the one or two local preparations of similar character which appear to be gaining in favour. Sugars are unaltered. Brown crystals are scarce, and yellows are generally in "low stock, Company's No. 3 having the bulk of the demand. , The inquiry for n»h is Slackening now that Lent is over. There has been a better demand for ling and herring this season than has been known for years. Case vinegar and second brand starch may be referred to as short lines. The inquiry for jam and dried fruit remains very quiet. Currants, however, command full prices. We learn that the Union S.S. Company have given the contract for the supply of j»m to all their boats to Kirkpatrick and Co., of Nelson, the selection being made from allcomers, either New ZeaUnd or Victoria, and based upon quality without regard to price. In the grain and produce market, maize is slightly firmer, as also potatoes. We quote: Maize, 3s lOd ; oats, 2» to 2s 3d ; milling wheat, 3s 9d to 4s ; fowl wheat, none ; potatoes, £4 ss. In the local produce market tho prices remain unchanged. Eggs are Is 6d per dozen wholesale, and Is 9d per dozen retail; while butter varies from Sd to lOd per lb wholesale, and lOd to Is per lb retail. The supply of butter appears to be dropping off somewhat in quantity, and the quality of some it shows an improvement as compared with what it was a few weeks ago. This is probably due to the fact that the nights are beginning to get a little cooler than they were. KAURI GUM MARKET. This market is steadier, although we have not so far heard of any advance in price. One large line of East Coast gum has changed hands at a price which has not transpired. Supplies for the 13 days of April amount to 141 tons. We quote : Poor ordinary, 30s ; fair ordinary, 3Gs to 40s ; best ordinary, 44s ; and East Coast, 53s to 57 b. THE AUCKLAND MARKETS.
