THE MOUNT EDEN RIFLE RANGE.
THE MOUKi EDKN Klb'LK KAMitf.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —That the Ilifla Range at Mount Edei i is more than "an annoyance," as suggestei > by your correspondent "J.C.5.," that it i i a positive danger, is confirmed by tw ; instances avouched to me by the individual ■ themselves since 1 last wrote to you upoi I this subject Some four weeks ago a younj ) person, who lives near Mount Eden, went w ) about a quarter to six m. to look for some . thing that had been lost there, when sud • denly a bullet whizzed just past her head i She was at the moment above the range, am r had no idea she was in any danger, 'lb. t other instance occurred about a year age a A lady and gentleman who had recentl; a arrived from England, and were unacquainted o with the geography of Mount Eden, wishe e to make a short cut to the summit. The e seem to have gone from Mount Eden roa f into Gaol road, and thence scrambled amon r boulders and rocks. All at once they hear e bullets whizzing by, and at once crouche A down behind the nearest boulders. The s had, I should have said, five children wit i them, and fearing some one might get hi' e the gentleman rose, and was seen by th i, firing party, a bugle was sounded, and a fla o waved ; the party was beckoned to croi s over the range, and get out of danger. Th n is the substance of the narrative given rr h by the parties themselves, who are in both ii ; stances thoroughly reliable. "J.C.S."affirn ; that £1100 or £1200 have been spent ov< l. thisrange. The more the pity, for it has prove I- a serious blunder, not only aB to position, bi )- as to length. The usual and necessary lengt e of a range is, I believe, 1000 yards; that : i, Mount Eden is but 600. There are " anno; '. ances" the public must bear, because unavoh is able, but 1 do not see that the public n called upon to consent to a danger like thi e or to any unnecessary encroachment upon tl )f full enjoyment of its health and pleasure r ), sorts. Edwin Cox. y Auokland, April 12, ISS7.
