" ' <J, . Tun meeting of the Devonport Borough ' Council was held last night at the Council Chamber. Present : The Mayor (Mr. M. £ Niocol), Messrs. Alison, Burgess, Cameron, * Duder, Philoox, and Bartley. The minutes i of last meeting were read and confirmed. t Charitable Aid.— In reply to a letter 1 from the Charitable Aid Board, information a was forwarded as to persons in receipt of t relief. v Extension of Boondariks.— A commu- g nication was received from tho Colonial 1 Secretary's office enclosing notices which hud v been published in the New Zealand Gazette f respecting the extension of the boundaries of j Devonport, p Management of Charitable Institc- j. txons.—A circular letter was received from the Buller County office containing suggeslions as to the maintenance of Hospital and Charitable Aid Institutions. Imperial Institute.—A letter was re- * ceived from the Treasury, Wellington, respecting contributions towards the eßtab- n lishment and maintenance of the Imperial Institute. * appointments.—A letter was received ° from the Department of Justice, stating that v Mr. Joseph Dinsdale had been appointed I cleric of the Licensing Committee. V COiNTKJBDTION FOR CHAKITABLK AlD.— I A letter was received from the secretary of I the Charitable Aid Board for the payment o of the sum of £207 3i 7d as the contribution a of the borough. It was resolved, "That I the amount be paid in four quarterly oontri- £ butions." li Depositing Earth. letter was re- o ceived from the secretary of the Harbour k Board respecting depositing of earth upon o land belonging to the Harbour Board, and 1 : stating that the offer had been declined. h Finance Committee.—Tho Finance Com- n mittee reported as follows : —Recommended & that the foreman of works prepare and sub- o tnit to the Council a specification of works c required to be done in Artillery Road and P Rattray-street. That notice, under flection B 264 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1886, Cl ao given to owners of property in these B streets, requiring them, within 14 days, to J perform the work specified, and informing si them that failing compliance therewith the E work will be done by the Council, and the J sost thereof recovered from the said owners P n proportion to their respective frontages, tl Certain conditions were recommended for 8] easing the cemetery reserve. The report 1c was adopted. 8] Works.— foreman of works reported lpon various works done and proposed, which were severally dealt with. L Public Library Act.—Tho Mayor gave d. rotice of motion for next meeting, " That w ihe Mayor be requested to take a poll of the v: atepayers under the Public Libraries Act, A 1869, to ascertain whether the provisions of b ;hat Act shall be adopted in Devonport." P New Council Chamber and Library,— a* Mr. Bartley submitted a plan for a new oi Council chamber and library, and suggested i suitable site. He estimated the cost of the « wilding proposed at about £100. It was cl •esolved that tenders be called for the w milding. \W
