We have, within the last few days, received a stronger proof than we have ever had of the want of a properly organised School of Art in Auckland. In the recent competitions held by the Auckland Society of Arts, we read that the pupils of the Christchuroh School of Art—a school conducted on the lines of South Kensington, and by certificated masters — have carried off no Jobs than seven section prizes, three bronze medals, and the Society's silver medal for the best work exhibited. This would probably have been the case in the last two exhibitions, had not the exhibits of the Christchurch School arrived too late for competition on each This shows unmistakeably the great want of systematic teaching in our city, when we have to let nearly the whole of our prizes go Southwards. Christchuroh is happily in the possession of an endowment for the support of her school; but we believe that, were a suitable building offered for the purpose here, the school might be made self-supporting, or very nearly so. We have been shown a letter from the Minister of-Education on the subject, in which he promises to do all in his power to aid the formation of an Art School in Auckland ; and we hope that in this time of Jubilee, when Auckland's wants are being considered, that the subject of an Art Sohool may not be forgotten. The Education Board might have done something if its administration had not been more extravagant than that of any other Board.
