Hugh Given and his wife, Isabella Given, were remanded for a week for medical treatment. : "Under and Over."—Albert Chatband was charged under the Police Offences Act, of 1884, section 28, sub-section 5, with playing a game called " Under and Over," at the Ellerelie races, last Monday. Prisoner .pleaded not guilty. Sergeant Pratt prosecuted, and called* Detective Hughes, who deposed to seeing the prisoner at the Ellerslio racecourse about three p.m., on Monday. . He was on his kneea with a box in front of him, and a crowd round him. The box was marked in chalk with U., 7., and O. They were used for playing a game of chance called "under and over 7." It wae played with two dice, and the players made bete whether the throws would be "under or over 7." The player had two chances to one of winning. He saw prisoner win 3s. To prisoner: Hβ saw the money on the table, and saw the prisoner win 33. Prisoner denied this, and said that not a shilling changed hands. This was the case for the prosecution. Prisoner was sentenced to 14 days' hard labour. Gaming and Lotteries Act.—Howard Osborne was charged with a breach of the Gaming and Lotteries Act by establishing a lottery by which money prizes were drawn for at the Ellerslie racooourso on Monday. Ser« geant Pratt said Mr. Cotter had been retained for the defence, and had asked him to have the case remanded. The police had no objection, and the case was accordingly X, remanded till next day. Assaulting his Wife.—Henry England was charged with assaulting his wife, ElizaI 8 both England, by throwing a tub at her. There was no appearance of either party, and the case was struck out.
