HANNAFORD V. HEIGHTON.

TO THE EDITOR. Slß,—Although the case of Klrsch v, Heigh" ton is sub judio9, you have permitted the defendant to largely occupy your columns on the subject. As my name frequently appears in the man's letter it is only fair that I should be allowed a small space for reply. I have never sought to conceal the fact that I was the cause of the information against Heighton being laid. Acting on advice from several gentlemen, I drew out all the particulars, and took it into Court on behalf of the young friendless foreigner, and glory in having done so ; but not one penny have I charged young Kirsch or anyone else for my time and trouble. Had I been the labour agent who treated Kirsch as he has been served, I feel I should have richly deserved to have been sent for a long term to Mount Eden, and flogged with the thief's "cDt." Heighton says, "It is pitiable to think that society should have so far degenerated in Auckland as to see a respectable (?) citizen subjected to a serious charge by the police." I say ifc is pitiable that a young friendless stranger should be allowed to be fleeced by ft labour agent and the entire community refraining from taking action in the matter. Heighton appears to have an exalted opinion of himself, and a very poor one of me. But permit me, sir, to tell that worthy that I most solemnly declare I would not change characters with him for the wealth of the Queen's jewels. However, the man's letter is most valuable for the prosecution. I have cut it out, gummed it on a sheet of foolscap, and written marginal notes, which will be most valuable to Sergeant Pratt on the flay the case comes on for hearing.—l am, &c, T. B. Hannafobd. 296, Queen-street, April 9,1887.
